What Will Your Future Be Like?

Mary Lou Youngblood, Executive VP of Women's Sports Services
offers insight to careers in the a career in women's sports and in the sports industry.

Here are a few projections about work in the future we thought you should know about.  According to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, women will finally get their chance at the top managerial and executive positions in the future.  Why?   According to the Department of Education, the number of women earning a four-year college degree has risen 44% since 1979.  Women now represent 56% of the estimated 1,140,000 college graduates.

Another projection is that employees will become increasingly isolated.  With the use of the cell phone and the Internet, face-to-face interaction will decrease.  Many believe social skills will weaken, and obstruct teamwork and threaten efficiency at the workplace, thereby decreasing networking opportunities.

With this in mind, it will become more important for all of us to increase our networking opportunities.  Men in sports positions have been networking for years and continue to help each other out. So if you are a woman in one of those top managerial or executive positions in sports, I encourage you to help other women.  There are many women who are interested and qualified to fill open positions, especially a position in women's sports such as the WNBA, USPV, WUSA, WPSL, or women's collegiate sports.

So what will my future be like?  I hope to be able to help a number of women.  [Source: Mary Lou Youngblood, Women In Sports Careers Foundation]
