HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA.  The Orange County Register has signed an agreement to sponsor the Girls Sports X-travaganza ™, southern California’s premier girls and women’s sports event.  The 3rd annual event, with an expected attendance of 10,000 will be held Feb. 10, 2001 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day®.

The agreement provides a comprehensive advertising package, which includes prime advertising space in the popular newspaper and in 24 select community newspapers.  The newspaper boasts a daily circulation of 364,133 with a Sunday circulation of 422,421.  Total daily readership is 1,083,260 with a 1,433,310 Sunday readership.

“We are very pleased to support this noteworthy event which recognizes the importance that sports represents in the lives of girls and women.  The time is long overdue, says Ronna Shipman, Vice President of Community Relations, Orange County Register.”

The signature event has been quietly growing in popularity the past few years.  Originally created in 1997 by Women’Sports Services in a partnership with Oshman’s Sporting Goods, the event is now solely owned and operated by Women’Sports Services. “We are thrilled that this event has caught the eye of the Orange County Register as a major sponsor.  We are equally delighted of the high importance the Register has placed on this worthwhile community event.

A press conference will be held preceding the event on Wednesday, Feb 7, 2001 (National Girls and Women in Sports Day). Event activities include sports skill instruction, fashion show, athlete panel presentation, extreme sports show, breast health awareness, child fingerprinting, dance performances, fly fishing lessons, and more.

The fun-filled -- feel good event – for girls and their families is supported by a number of professional and Olympic athletes who provide skill instruction, mentoring, and participate in autograph sessions.  Past athletes participating have included Lisa Leslie, Dot Richardson, Tisha Venturini, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Paula Newby Fraser, Connie Paraskevin-Young, WNBA LA Sparks, the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and more.

The OC Register joins a growing list of corporations supporting this event, including Hyundai Motor America, Alta Dena Certified Dairy, Franklin Covey, Sports Illustrated for Women, Oshman’s Sporting Goods, ProMarx, Just for Girls Sports and Women’Sports Services .  For more information or for sponsorship opportunities contact Women’Sports Services at (714) 848-1201.
